Job Description

The Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano College Access Program Manager, in concert and under the direction of the BTSJC Director will play the lead role in preparing 9th–11th grade first-generation, low-income, underrepresented students for college success. This individual will oversee programming that builds academic readiness, cultivates leadership skills, and fosters a college-going mindset. The College Access Program Manager will work closely with students, families, school staff, and community partners to ensure students are on track for college admission and postsecondary success.

Responsibilities -

  • Develop and execute college access programming for 9th-11th grade students by providing one-on-one and group advising to meet A-G requirements, extracurricular involvement and explore post-secondary education options.
  • Guide students in understanding the various types of higher education institutions, while highlighting their differences and helping students determine the best fit for their goals and aspirations.
  • Facilitate exploration of diverse majors, career pathways, and opportunities to identify areas of interest and potential future success.
  • Provide guidance on drafting personal statements, supplemental essays and exploring scholarships and leadership opportunities.
  • Educate students and parents on financial aid options, to ensure they are well-prepared to navigate the financial aspects of college.
  • Facilitate high school visits to guide students through the college application process while monitoring and supporting their progress in GPA, course selection rigor, and participation in summer enrichment programs.
  • Design and deliver workshops, seminars, and activities on academic skills, college access, readiness and personal development.
  • Provide resources and guidance on PSAT, SAT, and ACT preparation.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of student programming, progress, participation, and impact, utilizing data to evaluate program outcomes and provide regular updates to the Director.
  • Oversee summer enrichment programming by identifying and sharing opportunities for volunteer work, internships, and leadership programs, assisting students with applications, and tracking their participation to enhance their college applications.
  • Guide eligible 10th grade students through the Simon Scholars application process, including essay support and application submission.
  • Manage program communications, social media platforms and marketing by developing and distributing newsletter flyers, invitations, and reminders to promote programming highlights and student achievements.
  • Support with grant reporting, presentations, and event outreach efforts to raise awareness of the impact BTSJC is making in the community.
  • Cultivate meaningful and trusting relationships with students and their families through consistent effective communication by providing program-related updates, addressing individual needs, facilitation of parent meetings, academic workshops, and college readiness sessions to ensure families are well-informed and engaged.
  • Partner and maintain strong relationships with community organizations, school counselors, teachers, district members, to provide comprehensive student support and maximize opportunities for students.
  • Manage the 11th Grade summer writing intensive program and support the middle school summer program operations.
  • Collaborate with the Director to ensure programming aligns with the BTSJC Strategic Plan by actively engaging in team meetings, check-ins, and organizational initiatives to align with BTSJC goals.
  • Design and administer surveys to collect feedback from students and families for program improvement.
  • Attend professional training sessions to stay updated on best practices in college access and persistence for low income, first-generation students who are underrepresented students in higher education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications -

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, or a related field; masters degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience working in college access programs, education, or youth development.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and data management skills.
  • Ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders, including students, families, and external partners.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
