Duties

The Forensic Specialist Supervisor (FSS) is a "working supervisor" role responsible for the operational oversight of the Latent Fingerprint Section, and reports to the Forensic Unit Supervisor. FSS's are expected to be technical leaders and subject matter experts as they perform a mixture of technical and administrative tasks including, but not limited to:

• Casework management and supervision,
• Resource/Personnel allocation,
• Technical and/or Administrative report review,
• Coordination of scheduling and payroll/leave approvals,
• Personnel interview panel member,
• Performance evaluations of direct reports
• Initial/Onboarding training coordination and approval,
• Project management,
• Information request fulfillment,
• Training request evaluation and submission.

Requirements

MINIMUMS:

• Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to seven (7) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must obtain and maintain Virginia State Police AFIS operator certification within 6 months of employment.
• All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned.

Preferences:

• College Coursework in forensic science
• BS Degree in physical science/forensic science
• MS Degree in physical science/forensic science
• Experience performing casework as a Latent Print Examiner (LPE) (mock casework does not apply)
• Certification as LPE
• Experience testifying in court of law as an expert witness (preferably as a latent fingerprint examiner) (mock testimony does not apply)
• Completion of Specialized/Continuing Education training in latent fingerprint examination (college coursework does not apply)
• Experience in a forensic leadership role.
• Strong communication skills
• Experience as a team lead and/or supervisor.
• Experience with personnel allocation/scheduling
• Detail orientation and organizational/time management skills.
