FLSA Status: Exempt
Salary Range: $62,000 - $70,000, (salary is commensurate with experience)

SUMMARY
Washington Adventist University is accepting applications for a full-time faculty member teaching majors and non-majors undergraduate biology and chemistry courses. The successful candidate will be responsible for up to three biology and/or chemistry courses per semester, academic advising and assessment, and other duties. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Teach three biology and/or chemistry courses per semester.
  • Develop an elective course in area of expertise.
  • Design small research projects that will serve as supplementary academic activities for selected students, with strong scientific inclinations.
  • Serve as an academic advisor for departmental majors and pre-professional students.
  • Supervise and maintain departmental laboratories and equipment. This includes overseeing undergraduate teaching assistants.
  • Participate in necessary institutional activities (e.g. committees)
  • Participate in recruitment activities for the Department.
  • Develop a network of contacts to assist our students in tapping into the wealth of the scientific community found in the Washington, D.C. area.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate degree with curriculum awareness in one of the following areas: anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, biological diversity, bioinformatics, biotechnology, ecology, environmental science, genetics, microbiology, or neuroscience. Doctorate preferred. Graduate degree will be considered.
  • Post-doctoral experience desired.
  • Prior college or university teaching experience preferred, with experience in one or more of the following areas: anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, biological diversity, bioinformatics, biotechnology, ecology, environmental science, genetics, microbiology, or neuroscience.
  • Ability to integrate technology into course delivery and practical life applications.
  • Ability to communicate and work with a diverse population of students both in and outside the classroom via a Learning Management System platform (Desire2Learn).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, exceptional analytical and organizational abilities, and demonstrated initiative and energy.
  • Knowledge of, and commitment to, the university’s philosophy and mission.
EXPANDED JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Teach three biology and/or chemistry courses per semester. The preferred candidate will be qualified to teach courses in general biology, biochemistry, genetics, and physiology. Other teaching assignments may include a non-majors course for allied health or pre-Nursing students. Each course will require the organization, development, and supervision of lecture and lab sessions. This includes, but is not limited to, curriculum design and implementation, using effective pedagogical processes, and selection of textbook and other teaching aids necessary to the instruction of courses. The ideal candidate will lead and monitor classroom instruction that promotes educational and learning processes in keeping with faculty academic freedom and responsibility.
  • Develop an elective course in the area in which the terminal degree was awarded in, or similar. This course is expected to complement the overall emphasis of the program, which includes preparing students pursuing careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and in the biotechnology sector.
  • Design small-scale research projects involving existing resources and requiring some additional investment. A record of extramural support is desired, but not required. Opportunities for small-scale projects may include summer research activities and programs available for visiting high school students.
  • Advise departmental majors and pre-professional undergraduates in their academic careers. This includes the advising of students interested in programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician’s assistants, physical therapy, occupational therapy, etc. As needed, this will include assisting students to devise class schedules each semester and keeping students focused on meeting graduation requirements. For productive advising, this will require maintaining an appropriate schedule to allow for student access and inquiry.
  • Assist in maintaining and operating the biology and chemistry laboratories. This includes training and overseeing undergraduate teaching assistants in normal laboratory preparation, execution, and maintenance. Other duties involved in maintaining normal operation of the laboratory areas may also be necessary.
  • As a contributing faculty member, regular involvement in the university learning-community is highly desirable. This includes participation in necessary institutional activities such as, but not limited to, university committees, club sponsorship, facilitation of advisory committees, and mentoring of new and part-time faculty.
  • Participation in recruitment activities for the Department are essential to help the Department remain competitive and grow in the 21 st Century. These activities may include, but are not limited to, involvement in University-sponsored activities, outreach to local high schools, participation in STEM fairs, etc.
  • The successful candidate will engage in initiatives for recruiting and maintaining internship connections, while building a network of contacts to assist our students in tapping into the wealth of the scientific community found in the Washington, D.C. area. The end goal for this may include field trip possibilities, internships, and research assistantships for qualified students.
