Job Description

Sarmal, an innovative biotech company based in San Diego, California, is seeking a highly skilled R&D Scientist specializing in Nucleotide Chemistry to join our cutting-edge research team. We are developing revolutionary genomics platforms that aim to transform the fields of genetic testing and sequencing.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and synthesize novel nucleotide analogs for our proprietary FLASH sequencing technology
• Develop and optimize nucleic acid modification strategies for both TEEM and FLASH platforms
• Lead research projects focused on improving nucleotide chemistry for enhanced sequencing and detection capabilities
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to advance project goals
• Contribute to the development of intellectual property and patent applications

Required Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related field with a focus on nucleotide chemistry
• 5+ years of post-doctoral experience in nucleotide chemistry research
• Extensive hands-on experience with nucleic acid modifications, including base, sugar, and phosphate modifications and functionalizations
• Strong understanding of sequencing technologies, PCR, and enzymatic interactions
• Proven expertise in synthetic and organic chemistry, particularly related to nucleotide analogs
• In-depth knowledge of polymerase-substrate activity and interactions
• Demonstrated ability to design, execute, and analyze complex chemical synthesis experiments
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Industry experience in biotechnology or pharmaceutical sectors
• Familiarity with next-generation sequencing technologies and their chemical foundations
• Experience with luminescent or fluorescent nucleotide modifications
• Track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or patents in nucleotide chemistry
• Experience in project management and team leadership
