University of Hawai‘i, Kapi‘olani Community College, Library & Learning Resources Unit is seeking applications for the Reference Librarian (Casual Hire). Important note: Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave). Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the general direction of the Head Librarian, this position provides general reference assistance and instruction to library users during scheduled hours.
  • Provides basic technical support to students.
  • Provides instruction to students and faculty in the use of online and other resources available to the Library and elsewhere.
  • Prepares web instructional and informational material for students using the Internet, web applications and other information technologies.
  • Assists with special projects as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLISc) or equivalent Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • One or more years of experience providing reference service to a diverse public.
  • One or more years of experience working in an academic library.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching or training diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to use word-processing, multimedia processing, web design, and image editing software programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated initiative and the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
