Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Correctional Education Program or their Assistant Principal designee , th e Senior Librarian is responsible for th e functional supervision , operation, scheduling and collections of the institution's la w and genera l libraries. The Senior Librarian will coordinate , publish and distribute the schedule for hours of operations for each library to ensure all incarcerated people throughout the institution have the required access tim e s. The Senior Librarian will make recommendations to their direct supe rv isor regarding the various compliance issues involving access, disabled incarcerated people and appropriate accommodations, collection maintenance and development, and other issues as required . The Senior Librarian will compl e te and submit the appropriate purchase requisitions in order to maintain all compliance components of the law and general libraries . The Senior Librarian will provide functional supervision and direction related t o libr a ry operations and procedures to the Librarians and Library Technical Assistants throughout t he institution.

Directly oversees the operations for the institution's largest and most complex library as directed by their supervisor. Functionally supervises all institutional law and general library operations and ensures that all operational procedures regarding the law and general libraries are followed. Provides functional supervision and on the job training to Librarians and Library Technical Assistants. Works cooperatively with custody staff to ensure the safe operation of all libraries. Provides recommendations of corrective actions to the first line supervisor to ensure compliance items are maintained.

Develops, publishes, and distributes monthly operational schedules for each law and general library to ensure compliance with all mandates regarding access for incarcerated persons.  Provides recommendations to the direct supervisor for library staff coverage to meet the scheduled hours of operations.

Working Conditions

San Quentin Rehab Center is California’s oldest and best-known correctional institution, which was established on the site currently known as Point San Quentin, in July of 1852, as an answer to the rampant lawlessness in California at the time. The prison rests overlooking the bay on 432 acres and is located just 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the county of Marin. The walled prison is made up of four (4) large cell blocks (West, South, North, and East Block), one (1) maximum security cell block (the Adjustment Center), Central Health Care Service Building, a medium security dorm setting and a minimum-security firehouse.
