Airbnb is powered by our Guests & Hosts. Our teams work on everything from driving improvements for the end-to-end Host and Guest experience to launching new product verticals from the ground up. Our job is to build world-class, comprehensive platforms and features to create high quality experiences for our outstanding guest and host communities.

Within our Guest & Host organization is the Communication and Connectivity team, which owns the tools used daily by millions of guests and hosts, including Messaging (2nd most used surface within Airbnb), push notifications, and other deep integrations with key operating system features. This team is formed exclusively by native engineers and is constantly working on very high visibility key features that are part of our bi-annual launches.

The Difference You Will Make:

As a Senior Staff Engineer in our organization, you will lead the development and enhancement of our native messaging infrastructure. Your work will be critical to ensuring a seamless and reliable communication experience for Airbnb users globally. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to implement innovative solutions, improve existing systems, and ensure high performance and scalability of our messaging features.

A Typical Day: 

• Lead the design, development, and deployment of robust native messaging and communication features.

• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to align on the technical vision and product requirements.

• Drive end-to-end technical delivery of new messaging and communication features, from conception through deployment and maintenance.

• Ensure high quality standards and practices are maintained across the team.

• Mentor and support the growth of junior engineers and peers.

Your Expertise:

• 12+ years of industry experience in software engineering, with significant experience in developing native applications.

• Bachelor's and/or Master's degree, preferably in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

• Strong programming skills with hands-on experience in Swift. Kotlin is a great plus.

• Proven track record of architecting and delivering large-scale, high-impact projects within native platforms.

• Deep understanding of iOS and Android operating system integrations and optimization techniques.

• Ability to drive technical decisions and provide leadership in a collaborative and inclusive environment.

• Nice to have: extensive experience with messaging and communication protocols, including handling offline scenarios, media uploads, and reliable message delivery. 

• Nice to have: full stack experience, data analysis.

Your Location:

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager.
