Job Description

Normal Work Schedule: This position is expected to work at minimum the following schedule – Monday through Friday, 1:00 pm – 9:00 pm, some occasional weekend work may be required as job duties demand and sometimes overtime may be necessary. 

Location and Travel: This job operates in an office/shop/field environment. Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected. 

Working Conditions: The ability to remember information such as words, numbers, pictures, and procedures; to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences; to communicate information and ideas in speaking and writing so others will understand; and to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted. Sitting for periods of time and looking at a computer, tablet, or phone screen could be required. Time bending, stretching, kneeling, stretching, etc. could occur, lifting up to 25 lbs.

Job Summary 

The Mechanic/Yard role is the key to success for the Landscape Construction department as this position upholds the values of The Company. The Shop Mechanic will oversee the performance and maintenance of small and large equipment and machinery for the Company. This person will also help with tasks associated with the Yard and its materials, equipment, etc. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Ensure proper maintenance on machinery, equipment, and vehicles. 

  1. Identifies the causes of unexpected breakdowns of machines and equipment 

  1. Perform small engine repairs and routine maintenance to extend the life and functionality of landscaping equipment.

  1. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who works independently with minimal supervision and proactively identifies and addresses maintenance needs.

Role Specific Tasks and Duties 

  • Accurate submission of all required documentation and reports in a timely manner. 

  • Ensure all small engines are functioning properly and are safe for field use 

  • Maintain an inventory of small engine parts and ensure replacements are stocked. 

  • Perform test runs and adjustments after repairs. 

  • Perform oil changes on trucks, trailers, and small engine equipment using correct procedures. 

  • Clean machines and machine parts thoroughly; remove and reinstall components as needed. 

  • Lubricate and oil moving parts to ensure optimal machine performance. 

  • Inspect equipment for worn, damaged, or broken parts and document findings. 

  • oordinate regular service schedules with Shop Manager to minimize downtime. 

  • Keep detailed records of all maintenance performed and track upcoming service needs. 

  • Observes safety regulations and state laws regarding vehicle operation; ensures passengers also follow applicable safety regulations. 

  • Communicates with office by phone or crew app to receive information. 

  • Maintains a clean interior of vehicles that is free of trash and debris 

  • Ensures vehicle equipment such as brakes, lights, windshield wipers, etc., is operating properly. 

  • Reports vehicle problems to Shop Manager 

  • Submits accident reports when needed. 

  • Informing the shop manager when stock ought to be maintained, replenished, or replaced. 

  • Storing equipment and supplies in a safe manner 

  • Work in outdoor environment for entire scheduled shift 

  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections and service on machines. 

  • Thoroughly cleans machines and machine parts, removing parts and reinstalling as necessary. 

  • Oils and lubricates moving parts on machines to ensure effective performance. 

  • Records and reports damaged, worn, or broken parts. 

  • Identifies the causes of unexpected breakdowns of machines. 

  • Repairs broken machines quickly and efficiently. 

  • Prepares reports documenting work performed. 

  • Cleans, organizes, inventories, stocks, and otherwise maintains shop areas, parts, tools, and supplies. 

  • Coordinates with managers to schedule regular maintenance on machines. 

  • Collaborates with Operations Manager regarding new products being added and modifications that will be required. 

  • Makes necessary modifications and implements tests runs; confers with shop Manager regarding test results and makes additional alterations to machinery as required. 

  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

  • Keeps detailed records of services done and tracks services needed. 

Required Education and Licenses 

  • Some vocational or community college with related coursework or equivalent experience, required. 

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured on company policy 

Required Work Experience and Skills 

  • Mechanically inclined with great problem-solving skills. 

  • Experience working on small and larger engines and equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, etc., as well as vehicles. 

  • Works well independently and with others. 

  • Good communication skills. 

  • Organized with attention to detail. 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and stressful environment. 

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. 

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including Saturday work if necessary. 

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking. 

  • Able to bend, stretch, push, pull, and move as needed to reach, clean, and service machinery. 

  • Must be able to visually inspect machines 

 

Required Language: 

  • English--fluency in reading, writing, and speaking 

Preferred Work Experience and Skills 

  • Bilingual is preferred in Spanish/English 

  • 2-3 years of Landscape, Accounting or Construction experience 

  • Proven ability to communicate clearly and concisely 

  • Ability to multitask, may be working on up to 10 projects at a time 

  • ASE Certified Mechanic 

  • Small engine repair
