Description:

The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design (CoAD)seeks qualified candidates for an Associate or Full Professor of Historic Preservation and Cultural Sustainability. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a broad understanding of the profession of architecture and preservation with a vision for its future identity in Houston. Integrating cultural sustainability and the diverse design disciplines in the College, successful applicants should have robust e evidence of teaching, research and leadership towards a dedicated degree development. We encourage candidates with multidisciplinary interests to apply.

We envision this hire as a collaborative faculty member who would strengthen our design community and develop a historic preservation program expanding the College toward a formal Master of Science in Architecture in Historic Preservation with a focus on the Gulf Coast and prepare students for careers in heritage conservation through material expertise, evaluation of existing building systems, historical construction methods, and the design adaptation of technologies, planning and policy innovations. Adaptive use of existing buildings has become a focus within the construction industry and preservation is becoming an increasingly interdisciplinary field, with specially trained designers able to make a large impact on the repurposing of existing buildings in a circular economy.

Program Description
The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design offers its students and faculty a platform of integrated disciplines—Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Industrial Design—that work together to negotiate the complexities of contemporary design practice, making extensive use of our state-of-the-art digital and fabrication facilities. Situated in the heart of one of the most diverse and fast-growing cities in the United States, our College promotes the idea of the city as a laboratory for research, where design is considered a form of critical thinking, calling forth innovative solutions for contemporary conditions.

We have deep internal expertise in architectural history, social justice, community design, and cultural sustainability and resilience. This hire would add an emphasis on historic preservation and expand our interdisciplinary collaboration with other Colleges and Departments. This faculty member could work across disciplinary areas to include: Historic Preservation (CoAD); Sustainable Urban Design and Planning (CoAD); Engineering - Civil, Structural, Environmental (College of Engineering), Sustainable Urban Policy (Hobby).

Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience.

Qualifications
Qualified candidates for the position must have a terminal degree in architecture or preservation, ideally with affiliated professional licensure. A strong record of design practice, scholarship, and teaching experience is desired. Candidates must present superior design work, along with strong communication and collaboration skills.
